You are conducting an experiment with motion and forces using toy cars, a ramp, and different surfaces on your ramp.
Materials:
Cardboard trifold board for ramp toy car
Up to five books stopwatch
sandpaper track meter stick
wax paper track calculator
bubble wrap track (Please don't pop all the bubbles on the bubble wrap!)
Procedure:
Part 1
1) Make a ramp by placing one or more books under one end of the cardboard trifold board. Draw a picture of your ramp on your data sheet next to where you'll record the data for the first trial. Include the number of books you used to create the ramp! Measure the distance of the ramp with your meter stick.
2) Place the car at the top of the ramp, and gently tap the car to start it down the ramp. Time how long it takes the car to travel with the stop watch.
3) Calculate the speed of the car using the ramp distance and the time on the stopwatch. (Speed = distance / time). Repeat the trial two more times.
4) Find the average speed of your car and record the numbers on your data sheet. (To find average: add all the speeds together and divide by the number of trials.)
Part 2
1) Make a hypothesis about whether the car will move faster or slower when traveling down a sandpaper track, as compared to the plain cardboard ramp.
2) Place the car at the top of the ramp, and gently tap the car to start it down the ramp. Time how long it takes the car to travel with the stop watch.
3) Calculate the speed of the car using the ramp distance and the time on the stopwatch. (Speed = distance / time). Repeat the trial two more times.
4) Find the average speed of your car and record the numbers on your data sheet. (To find average: add all the speeds together and divide by the number of trials.)
Part 3
1) Repeat the steps for Part 2 using a wax paper track.
Part 4
1) Repeat your experiment using a bubble wrap track.
Part 5
5) Answer the analysis questions on the back of your data sheet.
