Cell Theory
Ted-Ed: "The Weird History of Cell Theory"
Use the slides above about Cell Theory to answer the questions below in your notebook. Write out the question / sentence!! This will be p. 3 in your notebook.
1. In 1665, Robert ____________ used a ___________ to examine a thin slice of ___________. Were these cells living? _____ What was their shape? ________
2. Hooke was responsible for _____________________ them "cells" because they looked like the ____________________________
________________________________________________________________________________.
3. In 1673, Anton von ________________ was the first to view living cells (organisms) in ____________ and scrapings from his _______________.
4. What did Mathias Schleiden conclude about plants in 1838?
5. What did Theodore Schwann conclude about animals in 1839?
6. a. What did Rudolph Virchow observe under the microscope in 1855?
b. Virchow reasoned that all cells come from other _________ cells by cell division.
7. State the 3 parts of the cell theory.
a.
b.
c.
8. To recap, the botanist _______________, the zoologist _______________, and the medical doctor ________________ all co-founded the cell theory.
Assignment: Cell Theory Timeline Foldable
You will create a timeline foldable (with 5 flaps) to organize information about five very influential scientists, “giants,” that helped to establish the cell theory as we know it today. These “giants” include Robert Hooke, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwan, and Rudolph Virchow.
Directions for the foldable:
Rubric:
Scientists' names _____________ / 10
Dates of contributions _____________ / 10
Color picture _____________ / 25
Contributions _____________ / 50
Chronological Order/Neatness _____________ / 5
Total _____________ / 100

These “giants” include Robert Hooke, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwan, and Rudolph Virchow.
Directions for the foldable:
- Fold a piece of paper the long way (hot dog style).
- Cut the top piece into 5 flaps.
- On the outside of each flap, in chronological order, write the scientist’s name and dates (of scientific contributions to cell theory). Add a picture - either of the scientist, or of something that relates to their contribution to cell theory. Color your picture.
- On the inside of each flap, write their contribution to the Cell Theory.
- After your foldable has been graded, glue or tape it onto page 4 in your notebook.
