Build a Body Project
Parts from The Body Book by Donald M. Silver and Patricia J. Wynne
2) Digestive System
a) Cut out the pieces of the digestive system along the heavy dark lines. b) Cut along the solid line inside the stomach to form a flap that opens when folded on the dotted line. Turn the Stomach over and tape the tabs on the Stomach Wall box so that the piece shows through the opening. c) Cut along the solid lines inside the Small Intestine piece to form a flap. Cut out the Villi box. Turn the Small Intestine over and tape the tabs on the Villi box so that the piece fits shows through the opening. d) Attach the Stomach, Large and Small Intestine together, matching the numbered tabs behind the numbers. e) Cut out the Pancreas. Glue the pointed end behind the stomach and the curved end behind the small intestine. f) Cut out the Liver and place it on across the top of the digestive system. Glue the pointed end on top of the stomach, and the fatter end by the pancreas and small intestine. g) Put the model on top of the skeleton by placing the “Inside the Face” piece on top of the skull, folding the tab behind the skull, and gluing it to the back of the skeleton. Place “The Face” on top of the inside piece. Fold the tab behind the skull and glue in place. Glue the tab at the top of the Food Tube (esophagus) under the face so the face can be lifted up to see the skull. h) Cut open the area inside the pelvis and put the last part of the Large Intestine behind the pelvis bone. |
3) Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems
a) Attach the trachea / bronchi to the lungs by putting glue on the back of the part with the alveoli and gluing it to the plain lung. Also, put glue on the tab for the trachea / bronchi, and glue it behind the patterned lung. b) Fold the tabs at the top of the lungs under, and put glue on them. Glue the folded tabs to the back of your ribcage. Do NOT glue the whole lung apparatus to the back of the ribs! c) Cut off the tab at the bottom of the heart. Put glue on the trachea, just above where it splits into the bronchi, and attach the heart to your lungs. d) Fold the tabs on the sides of the diaphragm under. Put glue on the BACK of the tabs, and attach the diaphragm to the back of the ribs. |
5) Urinary System
a) Cut out the pieces of the Urinary System. b) Glue the Ureters to the Kidneys and to the Bladder, matching numbers and dots. Glue the Urethra to the Bladder, matching numbers and dots. Cut off the tab at the top of the bladder. c) Lift the lower part of the Digestive System so you can see the backbone and the two lowest “floating” ribs. Fold back the tab on each Kidney, and glue each tab to the lowest two ribs on each side of the backbone under the Diaphragm. Fit the Bladder and Urethra inside the center opening of the pelvis, but don’t glue them. Then replace the lower Digestive System, inserting the Rectum behind the bladder. |
6) Finishing
a) Cut out the front part of the ribcage, along the heavy dark line on the outside only. Then cut open Slits A and B on the back part of the ribs. Insert the tabs into the matching slits and glue to the back of the model. Fold back the other two tabs on the ribcage labeled “fold and tape behind backbone” and glue each tab to the back of the model.
b) Place ribcage on top of the model of the Respiratory system so that the top of each lung peeks over the top of the rib cage about half an inch and the Diaphragm fits under the lowest 3 ribs on each side.
